Frequently asked questions. The SDL Garden Waste Collection Scheme

How much does it cost? During 2010 the SDL Garden Bags are £4.60 each (inc. VAT). The collection charge is £1.60 per bag empty, purchased in tickets of 20 costing £32.00 (inc. VAT)

What area does the scheme cover? Currently all of Torbay and the eastern side of the South Hams including Dartmouth, Stoke Fleming, Strete, Blackawton, Dittisham, Cornworthy and Totnes. If you are not in these areas and are interested in the scheme please contact as we are looking to expand. Email: bill@southdevonlandscapes.co.uk

What can I put in the bags? Any organic (non meat) material from your garden, under 3″ diameter. We also take flower trimmings and small amounts of cardboard.

What cannot go in the bags? All non organic material such as plastic, metal and glass. Plant pots, trays and labels should be excluded. It is vital to keep the collected material free of contamination as it is spread on organic farm land where animals feed.

How many bags will I need? The bags are 157Ltrs, just right for use around the garden. The average small garden needs 3-4 bags. Larger gardens will need more. We suggest you have plenty of bags to distribute the weight when you have heavy dense material like grass cuttings.

How often do you call? We call 19 times a year. Every two weeks in the summer, reducing to every three then every four weeks in the winter. We operate a collection request line to minimise road transport miles.

What if I have more waste than I can get in the bags? This is no problem. Just place the extra waste near the bags. Our driver will pick this up and punch extra holes in the ticket. If you have a large quantity then call (01803)839251. We can arrange a special visit by our collection vehicle and charge on a volume basis.
